Urban Design & Master Planning

Retail mixed use Development, Chestnut Hill

A highly visual "landmark" concept of urban design is proposed to transform this site into a prestigious retail location.  Tradition-inspired architectural features and a defined civic piazza establish an identifiable sense of place along a heavily traveled thoroughfare.  New retail, office and restaurant spaces tie together existing buildings on both sides of a side street and intensify the value of below-grade and upper floor levels.

Brighton Mills Retail Redevelopment, Boston

This, once outmoded, 15 acre shopping center and warehouse site is located in Brighton near Soldier's Field Road and the Harvard Business School.  Dating, primarily, from the 1960's, it has been redesigned to provide expanded shopping for an established urban neighborhood of housing, businesses and manufacturing.  Phased construction began with the adaptive reuse of 25,000 s.f. office building to relocate and enlarge a successful Bed & Bath store.  The new 60,000 s.f. Star market, double the size of its prior on-site operations, and a 30,000 s.f. general retail building followed.  The former Star space is now being renovated for additional shops.  New street edge landscape enhancements, decorative walls, and iron fencing strengthen the spatial definition of outdoor parking areas.  Articulated pedestrian connections provide an inviting link to neighboring residential streets.  Leasehold area increased from 165,000 s.f. to 234,000 s.f.  Developed by Beal and Company for Harvard University. Construction by Shawmut Construction Company.

Christian Science Church Center, Boston

One challenging aspect of this urban building and plaza complex was the facade alteration to the Christian Science Publishing House Building.  This provides connection between old and new components of the Center by linking into media and exhibition facilities of the new Collonade Building.  The Christian Science Church Center was awarded the Harleston Parker medal for design in 1975. Ralph Landau Building at MIT, Cambridge

Fenestration is one of the principal features of the Chemical Engineering Facility at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  This particular window concept was designed not only to enhance the interior environment of specific rooms but also to visually organize adjoining exterior spaces.  Exposed architectural quality concrete and the formal concept of a void within the structural frame are a vocabulary closely related to existing buildings in the vicinity. (Resident Architect for I.M. Pei & Partners, Architect.)
